Two families destroyed in the collapse of the building. “A terrible awakening”

Porto Sant’Elpidio (Fermo), June 7, 2026 – A very powerful roar, a building destroyed and, with it, the lives of the two families who lived there destroyed: an immense tragedy in terms of human lives lost, which occurred yesterday and for which the administration of Porto Sant’Elpidio is preparing to declare city mourning as soon as the funeral dates are known. The family consisting of Romano Cerquetti (60 years old) and his mother Ettorina Paccapelo (90 years old) was completely annihilated. The son had been extracted from the rubble and transferred by air ambulance to Torrette, from where, due to a doubly tragic and mocking coincidence, in the early afternoon the news of his death arrived just minutes after the lifeless body of his elderly mother was found, who remained buried in the collapse of her house, with firefighters frantically engaged in the search for several hours.

Two families destroyed in the building collapse. “A terrible awakening”

Ettorina and Romano, mother and son

A quiet, very reserved family, of whom neighbors remember the elderly mother walking down the street leaning on her cane and the son, unmarried, who worked in the countryside, in the fields and had a farm.

Savino and Vittoria lost their son Giuseppe

Of the other family, Savino Pieroni (89 years old, hospitalized in Torrette) and Vittoria Lanciotti (70, taken to Fermo hospital in conditions that are not worrying) survived, but for them it will be a matter of coming to terms with a very harsh reality, such as the death of a son: there was nothing that could be done for their son, Giuseppe Pieroni, 48 years old, who was sleeping a short distance from where the deflagration started. He was supposed to get up about half an hour later to get on his e-bike and go, with friends, around the dirt paths of the Sibillini mountains, his great passion after his work as an IT professional, where he was a partner of Tcp (a company active in Fermo).

The incredulous neighborhood plunged into grief

The neighborhood friends, yesterday morning, after the roar that shook the souls of all residents, went to his house to understand what had happened and remained stunned and saddened to learn that the only confirmed victim at the moment was Giuseppe, “a gentle, reserved person, with a big heart, an open and sincere smile, always ready to help everyone, especially friends. You could always count on him. Always with a smile, a kind soul and a reserved style” are some memories with which his friends wanted to say goodbye. “Today was a terrible awakening for all of us and it’s hard to accept it – the words of the friends from Bici Club Sibillini –. We waited with bated breath for the news to be false, a bluff, but no, fate decided. Our Peppe has been, is and will forever be a solid part of the soul of this association and above all a unique and sincere friend whom we will always carry in our hearts.”
