A moment later the car is in the sea, with both still inside the cabin. It all happened within a few seconds, today around 4 p.m., in front of the people who were in the port area of Cattolica at that moment.

Spouses saved by fishermen and passersby
Fishermen and passersby rushed into the water and managed to save the couple. But once brought back to the quay, the man walked away disappearing without a trace. The carabinieri are on his trail, engaged in searches and in reconstructing what happened.
What at first glance could have seemed like an accident, as the minutes passed, turned out to be an episode with much more disturbing outlines on which the Carabinieri are trying to shed full light.
The furious quarrel
At the wheel of the Volkswagen Golf was a 45-year-old Albanian resident of San Giovanni in Marignano. His wife, also Albanian, was traveling in the passenger seat, with whom relations had reportedly been tense for some time. According to the first reconstruction, shortly before the car ended up in the water, a violent argument broke out between the two. At one point the 45-year-old allegedly accelerated and directed the car towards the port, ending the run directly in the sea.
The impact with the water caused the Golf’s doors to open. While the car began to sink, husband and wife managed to get out of the cabin. The scene did not escape the people present on the dock. Some fishermen and passersby immediately mobilized, throwing themselves into the water and reaching the two. Both were pulled out of the sea and taken to the quay.
The husband fled
Just when it seemed that the emergency was over, however, the 45-year-old walked away. In a few moments he managed to disappear before he could be stopped. The carabinieri then started the search, but there is still no trace of the man. Investigators are now reconstructing what happened before the plunge into the sea.
The suicide attempt
The hypothesis under consideration is that the 45-year-old deliberately drove the car into the port, attempting to take his own life and simultaneously endangering his wife’s. A particularly serious situation on which all necessary investigations are still ongoing.
The previous quarrel
Also weighing on the reconstruction is what happened just twenty-four hours earlier. On Tuesday the carabinieri had already intervened for a quarrel involving the same couple. The 45-year-old, according to what was reconstructed, was drunk and disruptive and upon the arrival of the officers he attacked them. He was therefore arrested for resisting arrest. He was released today. Then, in the afternoon, the new quarrel with his wife and the Golf ended up in the port waters. Checks are also underway on the relationship between the spouses and on the man’s background, to reconstruct the context in which the episode matured. Meanwhile, the recovery of the Volkswagen left in the water has been completed. The necessary equipment arrived at the port to bring the Golf back to the quay.
