Rimini, August 20, 2026 – The 45-year-old Albanian accused of deliberately driving his car into the waters of the port of Cattolica with his wife on board was tracked down and arrested in the evening. After leaving immediately following the rescue, the man was located by the carabinieri near his home in San Giovanni in Marignano. He was detained for attempted murder and is now in prison at the disposal of the judicial authority.
What happened
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, around 4 p.m. According to the reconstruction, husband and wife were arguing inside a Volkswagen Golf when the 45-year-old suddenly accelerated, driving the car towards the dock until it plunged into the sea.
The impact with the water caused the doors to open and the two managed to get out of the vehicle while the car was sinking. Fishermen and passersby in the area jumped into the water, managing to bring both back to the dock.

Searches concluded after a few hours
The carabinieri searches were then launched, concluded a few hours later with his tracking and arrest. Investigators believe the maneuver may have been deliberate and are reconstructing the context in which the act took place, also in light of the tense relations between the spouses.
