Riccione, August 25, 2026 – The beach has narrowed by about twenty meters. Areas that previously did not have these problems are also suffering. This is stated by the president of the Lifeguard Cooperative, Diego Casadei, in front of “a summer like I had never seen before. Over forty days of rough sea.” Not a detail, because after each storm surge the sand eaten away on the coast deposits in banks in the sea in front of the shoreline. With calm sea conditions, the currents manage to partially return what was taken by the waves. But if the sea is always rough, this phenomenon does not occur and consequently the beach continues to shrink in length.
“Discussion with the Region for replenishment interventions”
“It was a very complicated July for weather and sea conditions – admits the State Property Councillor, Christian Andruccioli -. For this reason, we have already started discussions with the Region for the necessary replenishment interventions.” The current season is the fifth after the major replenishment of the beach using sand taken from fossil deposits offshore. The five-year period was previously given as the limit for the durability of the major replenishment. From the opposition, Forza Italia side, they have been asking the Municipality and the Region to prepare a new major replenishment for some time, but according to the councillor “there are no indications on this today.”
A lot of sand is needed and attention is turned north
So “we will plan those interventions that allow us to have an adequate beach next year.” It will not be an easy task because, as President Casadei specified, “even in my area these sea conditions have reduced the length of the beach by about twenty meters. And this stretch was previously an accumulation area where the erosive phenomenon was less felt.” A lot of sand is needed and attention is turned north. The storm surges have in fact transported considerable quantities of sand northwards. For several years sand has been taken in winter from the beaches of Rimini to bring it south.
The interventions
“We will propose the same formula again – continues Andruccioli -. Given the accumulations that have occurred in the southern area of Rimini and also at the border with Riccione. As has always happened, there are some areas of our coastline that have suffered more than others. Among these is certainly the southern area, but also between Piazzale San Martino and Piazzale Roma some areas are problematic. North of the port we will intervene also using material taken from the banks at the entrance through the sand pipeline. A lot of material accumulates in front of the port. The discussion with the Region has already started because we realize the amount of material we need to recover. But I can already say that the material is there. At the same time, interventions are being evaluated to restore the submerged barrier in sandbags.”
