Dozens of reports
The alarm was raised shortly after 9:30 AM on August 20, when dozens of reports arrived at 112 about a minivan with a German license plate traveling in the opposite direction on the north carriageway, towards Barberino di Mugello. Highway sensors confirmed the presence of the vehicle and the Highway Police dispatched six patrols: four from the Pian del Voglio subsection and two from Florence North. Meanwhile, the Panoramica and the Direttissima between Barberino, Badia, and Roncobilaccio were closed to traffic.
The escape continued
The driver, however, did not stop. Intercepted by officers, she avoided the first stop and continued at full speed. Upon reaching the Barberino junction, she reversed direction again, cutting off vehicles arriving on the four lanes. Upon reaching the toll booth, she resumed heading towards Bologna, always pursued by the Police, only to reverse and go wrong way again towards Barberino.
A 40-minute race
For over forty minutes the minivan also managed to evade the cameras: the woman took service exits in an attempt to hide. In the end, thanks to coordination between the officers and technical staff from Autostrade per l’Italia, it was possible to physically block the carriageways, forcing her to stop.
Cannabis intoxication
The 32-year-old appeared highly agitated and was taken to the hospital in Borgo San Lorenzo. Tests revealed cannabis intoxication: only after a few hours did the woman regain consciousness.
She was reported for dangerous escape and driving after drug use, as well as being reported to the Prefect for substance use and driving the wrong way. The license was revoked and the vehicle seized. A small amount of marijuana was also found on the minivan seat, which was confiscated administratively.
