Ancona, September 4, 2026 – All volumes removed, now there is a final word on the future of the historic Mondadori bookstore on Corso Mazzini.
The day before yesterday, the well-known publishing house, through a specialized company, arranged the recovery of all unsold stock left inside the large downtown store after its closure to the public on August 7.
Now the approximately 300 square meter space is completely empty and therefore the remote possibility that customers, whether loyal or not, could return to browse, choose, and buy books has definitively vanished.
Possible reopening elsewhere?
As mentioned a few days ago, hope is now placed on the possibility of a reopening of the Mondadori bookstore elsewhere, still in the city, perhaps in a central or semi-central area, managed by the staff who have been without work and salary for a month now. We are talking about half a dozen people, mostly women, who for years made that bookstore an absolute cultural hub in the heart of the capital, characterized by hospitality and professionalism.

The dialogue, far from easy, between some former employees and the publishing house, which suddenly found itself without two Mondadori points of sale in the Ancona area (the bookstore inside the Grotte Center was also closed), continues with the goal of not losing such a wealth of knowledge. It is difficult, if not impossible, we reiterate, for the bookstore to reopen in the same space, given the size of the store, the rental costs, and the need to intervene, in agreement with the property, on the plant system.
A story that began 35 years ago
It is worth remembering that the bookstore once called ‘Gulliver’ was opened on Corso Mazzini about 35 years ago and therefore before restarting an activity, a plant system revision will necessarily be required. The property owner, with whom Carlino has been in contact from the start, would also not be willing to re-lease those premises but would definitely aim for a sale. In fact, another commercial space in the heart of Ancona is destined to remain empty and closed for who knows how long. Meanwhile, the same owner, having not received rent for the first eight months of 2026, has initiated eviction proceedings against the bookstore management.
Empty shelves
The final act, not only symbolic, was the emptying of the shelves by the Mondadori publishing house. It is unclear what will happen inside the Grotte Center with the space left by the other Mondadori point of sale, managed by the same company that had been running the Corso Mazzini bookstore for decades. The shopping center has been acquired by a large Spanish group.
