A vacation trip turned into a tragedy for a family unit residing for years in the Cesarea street neighborhood, originally from North Macedonia: the lives lost were two children aged 4 and 11 along with their 74-year-old grandmother, who were traveling in the back seats.
Only injured, although urgently transported to the hospital and by air ambulance, were the 39-year-old father driving the vehicle and the 33-year-old mother.
The news spread in the city some time after the event, first reaching the neighbors and then the young classmates of the older child, ready to start the new school year at the Ricci Muratori middle school.

According to investigations carried out by authorities across the border, the car in which the family was traveling collided with a truck stopped in a rest area due to a mechanical failure, after first hitting the guardrail.
The driver of the heavy vehicle was unharmed.
Toxicological and breathalyzer tests performed on the car driver were negative, while investigators continue technical checks on the dynamics and passenger restraint systems.
To allow rescue operations and investigations, coordinated with the local judiciary and with the support of the embassy for the repatriation of the bodies, the road artery towards Koper remained closed to traffic for almost seven hours.
