Bologna, September 15, 2026 – Marin Jelenic was capable of understanding and willing on the day when, that cursed January 5, he stabbed to death the train conductor Alessandro Ambrosio. And this is why Jelenic will face trial in the Court of Assizes, having been deemed “capable of participating in the trial” by the expert appointed by the judge.

This is the outcome of the psychiatric evaluation submitted last night by psychiatrist Domenico Berardi.

A conclusion put in black and white in the 50-page document delivered yesterday to the president of the Court, Pasquale Liccardo, to the public prosecutor Michele Martorelli, and to the parties represented by lawyers Marcuccio (defense of Jelenic), Sabattini for Ambrosio’s family, and Carastro for the Municipality, which joined as a civil party in the proceedings.

“No infirmity or illness, intense aggression on the day of the murder”

A document in which the Court’s expert concluded precisely that Jelenic, 36 years old, “did not present at the time of the commission of the acts any infirmity or illness capable of excluding or greatly diminishing the capacity to understand and will.” Instead, on January 5, Jelenic would have acted following an “intensification on the day of the murder of aggression and interpersonal violence.”

From what emerges from psychiatrist Berardi’s evaluation, appointed by the judge last June 17, Jelenic is portrayed as a person with violent behavior but not attributable to a psychiatric pathology.

The puzzle of the motive

“The leap from personal injury to murder is immense – writes the expert in the report – but beyond the alcohol abuse observed also in other episodes of violence, there is nothing indicating an acute impairment of the mental state of the examinee,” who is also described as “emotionally detached from the events” and “neither anger nor anxiety nor anguish” emerges from him.

Furthermore, at the conclusion of the report, due to the “reticence of the examinee (…) it was not possible to question him about the reasons for this escalation” of violence that led to the murder of Ambrosio within the area reserved for employees of a parking lot at Bologna station. Therefore, the puzzle related to the motive that drove Jelenic to kill remains.

The trial in Assizes against Jelenic will resume on September 23, when the judge’s expert will report to the Court on the evaluation and the parties will be able to make their considerations.
