Porto Sant’Elpidio (Fermo), June 6, 2026 – Violent explosion and collapse of a building in via Trentino in Porto Sant’Elpidio, where firefighters extracted two elderly people alive, and a 47-year-old man deceased, while search operations for an elderly woman are underway.
The building explosion occurred at dawn this morning. It is a two-story building with an attic. The deflagration occurred on the second floor, inhabited by an elderly couple and their son. The latter was extracted lifeless. On the first floor, however, were a man and his mother. The man was extracted alive, while the search for the woman is ongoing. On site, in addition to the mayor of Porto Sant’Elpidio, were also prosecutor Ianella and the prefect of Fermo.
“At the moment, the toll is three injured people, two of whom were transferred to the Torrette regional hospital, a 47-year-old man deceased, and a woman whose search is still ongoing,” the mayor declared with evident concern.
The mayor of Porto Sant’Elpidio, Massimiliano Ciarpella, arrived at the scene of the tragedy shortly after 6 this morning, alerted by the fire department’s operations center after the violent explosion that devastated a city building. For hours, the mayor has been closely following the rescue and search operations among the rubble, coordinating with law enforcement, firefighters, and medical personnel on site.
The search for the woman residing on the first floor is still ongoing. The Fermo fire department command involved in the search has reinforced its operational personnel by integrating specialist units from commands in the Marche region. Currently, over thirty men are involved. Along with the firefighters, carabinieri, police, and 118 personnel are on site.

Two teams of firefighters from the Fermo Command are operating on site, with the support of the Civitanova Marche (Mc) team, canine units, and Usar personnel, activated for search operations among the rubble. Thanks to the use of the aerial ladder, two people were evacuated from the apartment adjacent to the building affected by the explosion.

The injured were transported by air ambulance to the hospital in Torrette di Ancona.

The search for a missing woman is underway. Firefighters are working with Usar units, drones, canine units, and excavators for the search operations.
Firefighters recovered the lifeless body of a man and immediately rescued two injured people. A boy has just been extracted from the rubble.

A gas leak is believed to have caused the deflagration that occurred shortly before 6 am, according to initial information.

118 medical personnel and firefighters are working to search for any bodies remaining under the rubble.
