And the ‘at risk’ area has further expanded: tomorrow, Wednesday, August 5, the orange alert for extreme temperatures concerns the Bologna and Ravenna plains, the Ferrara and Modena areas, the Reggio Emilia area, and the Piacenza-Parma plains. Yellow alert in the remaining areas of the region and green only in the mountainous areas of Romagna, Bologna, in the Parma-Piacenza areas, and on the Romagna and Ferrara coasts. In short, to the very hot areas of the region, the entire Piacenza-Parma plain area is added in the latest orange alert issued by Arpae. But according to the monthly forecasts, it will be necessary to wait until Ferragosto to have a real turning point in this scorching summer.

The weather alert for extreme temperatures in Emilia Romagna
“For Wednesday, August 5, in the plains and first hill areas – writes the Regional Agency for Prevention, Environment and Energy of Emilia-Romagna – high maximum temperatures are expected to persist (around 38°C or locally higher) with widespread bioclimatic discomfort conditions. Furthermore, scattered and short-lived thunderstorms cannot be excluded from the afternoon, with possible occasional associated effects.”
Red alert for severe bioclimatic discomfort until August 6
The Municipality of Bologna has issued a red alert for severe bioclimatic discomfort in the urban area of the city, which will continue until August 6 inclusive. “For today, severe bioclimatic discomfort is expected – writes Arpae -. The average Thom index will be 26; yesterday a value of 26 was observed. It is the ninth consecutive day of persistence of at least mild discomfort conditions. The average Thom index for tomorrow is expected to be 27. Therefore, conditions of severe bioclimatic discomfort will persist and will remain so for the day after tomorrow.”

Forecasts: the abnormal heatwave continues until August 10
The weather trend in Emilia-Romagna from Friday, August 7 to Monday, August 10, 2026, on the Arpae website speaks of “infiltrations of humid Atlantic air that will cause greater instability on the Apennine ridge between Friday and Sunday, which will also extend to the plains on Monday, with thunderstorms and a slight drop in temperatures.” Saturday, August 8 will still see a slight drop in temperatures in Emilia Romagna.
Ferragosto will mark the end of the scorching summer
According to the analysis based on the Ecmwf monthly forecast system of Tuesday, August 4, by Maria Stefania Tesini, “the week from August 10 to 16 in Emilia Romagna appears characterized by the presence of a high-pressure field over the Mediterranean basin, while westerly flows run along the Alpine arc. In this context, temporary episodes of instability may occur, with precipitation expected overall in line with the period’s norm. Temperatures will tend to fall, although remaining slightly above the climatological average.”
But the real novelty will arrive (finally) from Monday, August 17: “During the period, westerly flows seem to prevail over Northern Italy – writes Arpae –, while the anticyclone present over the Mediterranean basin tends to retreat southward. In this context, our region may be affected by episodes of instability, with precipitation that, overall, is expected to be in line with or slightly above the period’s norm. Temperatures will tend to return to values close to the climatological average.”
