Bologna, August 5, 2026 – The Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has become the target of a series of graffiti on the walls of the city center of Bologna. In Vicolo Bianchetti, a cartoon of the Prime Minister was drawn with a gun pointed at her temple and the writing “Death to Meloni and the fascists.” The report was immediately sent to the Municipality, which then removed the writing.

“Yesterday I instructed the Municipality’s maintenance service to erase those insulting and violent writings against President Giorgia Meloni and the police forces. I strongly condemn every act of intimidation and violence. The mayor has privately expressed his closeness to the President, on his own behalf and that of the city of Bologna,” said the Bologna Councillor for Security, Welfare and Health, Matilde Madrid.
Among the targets, the police forces were also in the crosshairs of the writers: “Death to the police,” was written, for example, in Piazza Maggiore.
De Pascale: “Serious and unacceptable act”
The Governor of Emilia-Romagna, Michele de Pascale, also expressed his closeness to the Prime Minister on social media: “The writings and threats that appeared in Bologna are a serious and unacceptable act that must be condemned without any ambiguity. Solidarity to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni – wrote de Pascale – and to the women and men of the police forces. Threats have nothing to do with democratic debate. Respect for people and institutions is a value we must defend every day.”
Expressing solidarity with the Prime Minister, PD deputy Andrea De Maria states: “Political debate in this historical phase can and must be sharp, lively, and passionate, but anyone who cares about democracy must keep in mind that there is a limit that can be crossed at one’s own risk: the absolute rejection, always and in any case, of insult, delegitimization of the opponent, and incitement to hatred. Bologna and all of Italy need cohesion, a sense of the State, and civic responsibility. We will not allow intolerance to poison our civil coexistence.”
“The PD of Bologna condemns the offensive and violent writings against the Prime Minister and the police forces, as well as stigmatizes every act of intimidation and violence. Democratic debate is not advanced through violence, nor by exploiting what happened to fuel political conflict. The tone must be lowered and we must return to a civil and respectful dialogue towards the city and all institutions,” reads a party statement.
Reactions: from Bignami to Ministers Calderone and Bernini, total condemnation
Strong condemnation immediately came yesterday from several national politicians. Galeazzo Bignami, president of Brothers of Italy in the Chamber, spoke of a “climate of violence fueled by certain left-wing groups.” From the Undersecretary for Culture, Lucia Borgonzoni, came the call for an unequivocal condemnation of the “serious and disturbing message” to every political force.
“I hope the perpetrators of this disgraceful act are identified,” said the Minister of Labor and Social Policies Marina Calderone. Solidarity with the Prime Minister also came from the Minister of Research and University Anna Maria Bernini, who noted about the act: “It is not criticism, threat, or protest: it is insult. It is not an expression of dissent, it is hatred.”
