Bologna, August 6, 2026 – There are concerts capable of leaving an indelible mark in the history of Italian music. Concerts that span decades, whose story is passed down from father to son, thus continuing to remain engraved in the memory of those who experienced them and in the imagination of those who have only heard about them.
There are nights that change the face of a city, nights destined to become legend, immortalized forever in the memories of those who – under that stage – realized they were part of something unrepeatable.
The extraordinary event that on June 21, 1984 filled Piazza Maggiore is the most authentic testimony: a memorable evening born to celebrate the first twenty years of Francesco Guccini’s career and that, more than forty years ago, gathered over 150,000 people from every corner of Italy to create a colossal gathering, passed down in history as the “Woodstock padana.”

A mega event capable of making the heart of Bologna’s historic center beat in unison, cradled by the sound of the guitar and the great hits that forever marked the artistic path of Francesco Guccini, capable over time of uniting many different generations of fans like an invisible thread.
What made that night magical was also the extraordinary parade of great artists, colleagues, and friends, who took the stage alongside the “Maestrone”: names of the caliber of Lucio Dalla, Giorgio Gaber, Paolo Conte, Nomadi, Equipe 84, not to mention Claudio Lolli, Giampiero Alloisio, Deborah Kooperman, Pierangelo Bertoli and the Viulàn. An event, in short, that from the beginning was destined to enter history.

Guccini’s words recalling the big concert: “At first I was terrified, then you loosen up and go”
“It was like going to a university exam, at first you are terrified, then you loosen up and go. I never sang again in Piazza Maggiore and, although I played in stadiums, I never found a crowd like that again. After the concert almost everyone left and my friends and I went to have dinner at the Osteria delle Dame where they had prepared catering just for us. I don’t know why but at some point Bettino Craxi also arrived,” Guccini recalled in an interview with Carlino just two years ago.

A night that the film-concert “Francesco Guccini: Fra la via Emilia e il West” made immortal, bringing to the big screen all the intensity of that extraordinary evening and allowing thousands of spectators to relive its emotions. A dive into the past that, almost forty years later, was able to fill Piazza Maggiore once again: in June 2024, in fact, the film screening inaugurated the Sotto le stelle del Cinema festival, promoted by the Cineteca di Bologna as part of Bologna Estate.
On that occasion Guccini, born in Modena but adopted by Bologna, took the stage to talk with Massimo Cotto, retracing memories, anecdotes, and impressions of that night that transformed Piazza Maggiore into an immense embrace of over 150,000 people.
“An incredible evening, that could only happen in Bologna,” the Maestrone recalled, rewinding the memory tape in front of an audience that, decades later, continued to show him the same affection as back then.
