Bologna, August 6, 2026 – Francesco Guccini, born in Modena but adopted by Bologna, died at 86 years old and was one of the greatest and most popular singer-songwriters of Italian music. A refined yet sharp and ironic artist, his works have always been a symbol of political and social commitment. Besides obviously having enormous artistic value, so much so that precisely because of the stylistic beauty of the lyrics of his songs, Guccini is defined by many as a contemporary poet and intellectual.
Author of about twenty albums
Author of about twenty albums (among others Radici, Via Paolo Fabbri 43, Metropolis and, the last one in 2023, Canzoni da osteria) in over 50 years of activity, he also wrote songs – often inspired by American folk, especially Bob Dylan, and later became very famous – for other performers such as Nomadi, Equipe 84 and Caterina Caselli. L’Antisociale, Auschwitz, Noi non ci saremo, Dio è morto, Per fare un uomo, are just some examples.
Writer, cartoonist, teacher and occasionally actor
However, Guccini was not limited to being just a successful musician, in fact his art spanned many other fields: he was also a writer, a cartoonist, a teacher and occasionally an actor. In his private life, he married his first wife Roberta Baccilieri in 1971. Later he had a relationship with Angela Signorini, from whom he had his only daughter Teresa in 1978. His second wife was Raffaella Zuccari, whom he married on April 21, 2011.
The beginnings
After an adolescence spent between university, journalism and teaching Italian language at the Bologna branch of the American Dickinson College, in the 1950s he began writing songs while his career as a singer-songwriter debuted in 1967 with the album Folkbeat n° 1 with songs that entered the history of Italian music, such as Noi non ci saremo, Auschwitz and Canzone per un’amica.

A musician who always loved the stage more than TV appearances, commercial success came in 1976 with ‘Via Paolo Fabbri 43’, an album containing ‘L’Avvelenata’, a song that strongly responds to the criticisms received by other singer-songwriters and the journalistic critics. In 1979 ‘Album Concerto’ was released (together with Nomadi), the first album featuring Renzo Fantini, who was destined to become Guccini’s historic producer.
The musical career
The musical career In 1981 came ‘Metropolis’, “an album dedicated to cities rich in history and with strong symbolic value such as Byzantium, Venice, Bologna and Milan”, as reported by the official website of the singer-songwriter. Three years later ‘Fra la via Emilia e il West’ was published, which faithfully reproduced the songs that echoed in the mega concert of June 21, 1984 in Piazza Maggiore in Bologna, where the 20 years of the artist’s musical activity were celebrated. Guccini’s 12th album ‘Quello che non…’ from 1990 contains the song ‘Canzone delle domande consuete’ which won the Targa Tenco as the best song of the year.

Another Targa Tenco in 1993 this time with the album Parnassius Guccini. A recognition he also received in 2000 with the song ‘Ho ancora la forza’ (inside the album Stagioni) written together with Ligabue. In 2010 ‘Storia di altre storie’ has the peculiarity of collecting, besides the musician’s hits, also the unreleased song ‘Nella giungla’, with which he intended to raise public awareness about the release of Ingrid Bétancourt kidnapped by the FARC in 2002. In 2012 the last studio album ‘L’Ultima Thule’. with which Guccini declared he wanted to say goodbye to his profession as a singer-songwriter the following year. In 2015 the Club Tenco decided to dedicate the historic festival held every year in Sanremo to him.
The bond with Modena and Bologna
The bond with Modena and Bologna Guccini was born in Modena on June 14, 1940, but due to the war he spent the first years of his life in Pavana, the Apennine village of his paternal grandparents, located in the province of Pistoia on the border with Bologna. He attended the teaching institute in Modena in the 1950s, then enrolled at university for the first time in ’58-’59 with a major in Foreign Languages and Literatures. From ’59 to ’60 he worked as a journalist at the Gazzetta di Modena and in 1961 he moved to Bologna with his family, the city where he continued to live, although in the last years of his life he returned to live in Pavana.

Until 1985 he taught Italian language
From 1965 until 1985 he taught Italian language at the Bologna branch of the American Dickinson College. His bond with Bologna and its most iconic places stands out in many of his songs, one of which is dedicated precisely to the Emilian city. In the hearts of Bolognese people (but not only), the legendary concert of June 21, 1984 that brought over 160,000 people to Piazza Maggiore will remain, an unprecedented and unexpected musical event. It was the concert to celebrate Guccini’s twenty years of musical activity and on stage with him were great friends and colleagues including Lucio Dalla, Paolo Conte, Nomadi with Augusto Daolio, Pierangelo Bertoli. A double album and a film were later produced from this concert. The political commitment Guccini has always been characterized by a strong political and social commitment that vividly emerged in his songs.
Guccini and politics
His positions have always been considered close to the left, although he has always declared himself an anarchist. In a recent interview he confessed: “I vote PD, but I have never been a communist”.
The films
The Modenese singer-songwriter took part as an actor in 21 films, while for one (Nenè from 1977) he composed the soundtrack. Among the films in which he appears as an actor are among others Radiofreccia, the work of Luciano Ligabue, and the feature films by Leonardo Pieraccioni Una moglie bellissima, Io & Marilyn and Ti amo in tutte le lingue del mondo.
The novels
The Emilian artist has given birth to or contributed to the writing of many books: from novels to essays. His debut as a writer took place in 1989 with his first novel ‘Cròniche epafàniche’. In 1997 he began a literary collaboration with Loriano Macchiavelli, with whom he wrote as many as eight novels. In 2019 he published ‘Tralummescuro’, a book that was among the five finalists for the Campiello Prize.
The awards
Francesco Guccini was one of the artists with the highest number of recognitions from the Club Tenco, with four plaques, two awards and a Le parole della musica prize, to which various other recognitions are added.
The honors
In 2004 he was awarded the honor of Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by then Head of State Carlo Azeglio Ciampi; he also received two honorary degrees. The first in 2002 in Primary Education Sciences from the University of Bologna and from that of Modena and Reggio Emilia, the second in 2012 in Humanities from the American University of Rome.
