It is a very deep bond, in fact, that the great singer-songwriter, poet, and actor established over the years with Mondolfo and since this morning, when the news of his passing spread, the feeling of condolence from the entire local population has been extremely heartfelt and widespread.
The citizenship of Mondolfo to Guccini and the city mourning
It was the summer of 2022, exactly June 25, when Francesco Guccini was granted citizenship of the Municipality of Mondolfo, the town of his wife Raffaella Zuccari, 28 years younger. Today Mayor Alice Andreoni decided to proclaim city mourning for the day on which the Maestro’s funeral will take place.
A mourning, moreover, not only of the institutions but also of many people who crossed paths with Francesco Guccini in the town streets and numerous shopkeepers. Among them is Luca Piccioli, owner of Osteria Dal Presidente, in the heart of Mondolfo, who had the fortune to welcome him several times. “He often came to us and among his favorite dishes – he says – were rigatoni alla gricia. And I always prepared Christmas Eve lunch for him on commission from his wife Raffaella’s family. Centered on stockfish with potatoes. Then – Luca recalls – I would go to their house to get coffee and spend a long time with the Maestro talking about music. And in one of these meetings, as president of the Santa Cecilia band, I proposed to him to create a band arrangement of some pieces that we then performed at Christmas 2025 arranged by Maestro Michele Mangani. Life passes, but the works remain and his music is a work of art that will last forever.”
Mayor Andreoni: “A presence dear to our community leaves us”
Deeply touched by the Maestro’s passing, so much so as to declare city mourning for the day of the funeral, is Mayor Alice Andreoni: “The administration joins with emotion and respect in remembering Francesco Guccini, one of the greatest protagonists of Italian music and culture. An immense artist and a presence dear to our community leaves us. To his wife Raffaella, to the family, and to all who loved him goes our most sincere and heartfelt condolences.”
Of the same tenor are the words of regional councilor Nicola Barbieri: “One of the greatest singer-songwriters has left us. I keep a special memory of the evening (June 25, 2022, ed.) when I had the honor, as mayor, to confer honorary citizenship of our community on him. It was an important moment, which sealed a sincere bond between Francesco Guccini and Mondolfo, where he chose to live some of the most important moments of his life.”
Former mayor Cavallo: “I was emotional for the wedding”
Even more heartfelt is the memory of former mayor Pietro Cavallo, who married Guccini and Raffaella Zuccari in April 2011: “It is one of the most beautiful things I have done as mayor. I had and have a special admiration for Guccini and when I united him in marriage with Raffaella I was deeply emotional, because as a student, in the 70s, I frequented the Bologna tavern where Guccini often met. He will remain forever in our hearts”.
