Incident in Colombarone, hours of anxiety for Carlo Betti of the "Van": he is in serious condition

Pesaro, August 13, 2026 – Carlo Betti, 69 years old, the man behind “Il furgoncino”, the quickly made sandwiches, was the victim of a serious road accident last night shortly after midnight, along the Adriatic highway at the roundabout of Colombarone at the beginning of Siligate for those heading north. Betti, who was riding his motorcycle, a small displacement Honda, apparently went over the curb while navigating the roundabout. He lost control of the motorcycle and after a terrifying flight, he rolled disastrously on the asphalt. Fortunately, behind him was a car whose driver, having seen the whole scene, stopped the traffic and then called for help. The intervention of the motorist was providential, because Carlo Betti risked being run over by passing vehicles: a very busy highway at that hour. The carabinieri from the Gabicce station arrived on the scene and regulated the traffic, followed by an ambulance that provided first aid. Afterwards, given the conditions, even though Carlo Betti was conscious, a helicopter ambulance landed in a clearing near the highway and transported Carlo Betti to the hospital in Ancona where he was admitted to the intensive care unit, where he is kept in a medically induced coma.

The doctors want to have a precise clinical picture of the injuries and any fractures before intervening. The injuries sustained by Betti, including to the face, are said to be very serious. The prognosis is reserved, but the man of the van is not believed to be in life-threatening condition.

Yesterday the family members went to the hospital in Ancona, starting with his brother Ugo, a former municipal employee and among the organizers of the recent ’Palio dei bocia’ race.

Carlo Betti’s “Furgoncino”

The accident that saw Carlo Betti as the unfortunate protagonist quickly made the rounds of the city yesterday morning – many phone calls also to the newsroom – precisely because this imaginative and ingenious inventor of on-the-go sandwiches is very popular not only in the city. His yellow Volkswagen van is present at many events, not only in Pesaro but also in nearby Romagna. His activity is inspired by the southern United States, starting a few years ago with aperitifs at the Mancini farm on the panoramic San Bartolo.

A great success. Then his on-the-road ‘restaurant’ has been invited for years to Valentino Rossi’s ranch when the 100 kilometers race is held and recently joined the large caravan that followed the entire Jovannotti concert tour. For a couple of years, he, a big fan of Inter and Vuelle, has also opened a business behind the church of Sant’ Agostino.
