“If the one giving birth is not a ‘mother’.” This topic will be addressed by professionals expected in Riccione on October 3 and 4 to participate in the national congress of the Italian Association of Obstetrics where they will discuss “care for the Lgbtqia+ community” with an “overview of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding in the trans community.”
The Aio talks about it as a new professional frontier that the association has been watching closely for a couple of years. But the attention on the topics addressed at the congress has attracted the curiosity of Futuro nazionale.
Bergamini: “Maternity and paternity cannot be erased or rewritten to fit strange narratives”
“I find it absurd that they even assign 10.5 credits for training that addresses pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding within the trans world. We are truly in an upside-down world,” are the first words of the honorable Davide Bergamini, regional head of Futuro Nazionale in Emilia-Romagna. “A man does not breastfeed. It is not an insult but simply biological reality. For Futuro Nazionale, the natural family is a red line that cannot be crossed: father, mother, and children. Maternity and paternity cannot be erased or rewritten to fit strange narratives. Respect for every person is mandatory, but respect does not mean pretending that reality does not exist.”
The Lgbtqia+ community and the risk of reduced access to care
In individuals who do not undergo reconstructive surgeries, retaining reproductive organs, there is the possibility of giving birth. The first day of the Aio congress in Riccione will open by discussing prejudice and discrimination against the Lgbtqia+ community, and the consequent risk of reduced access to care. In the morning, there will be a moment when Egos Botteghi, a trans activist, author, and trainer, representative of Trans Parenthood and the ‘Trans Parents Network’ association, will speak. It will be at that moment that breastfeeding and childbirth in the trans community will also be discussed.

“Yet another clumsy attempt to distort reality”
Concepts and evidence that find no support in the vision of Futuro nazionale. The provincial committee of Rimini also lashes out against the Aio congress. “Medicine must be able to assist every person, but maintaining scientific evidence and biological reality as references. Inclusion cannot mean erasing or making irrelevant the words mother, father, woman, and man. For this reason, we consider it appropriate to open a discussion also on the criteria by which training credits are assigned to initiatives that address such controversial topics. Defending the traditional family does not mean being against someone: it means defending a model of society in which we continue to recognize ourselves and that we do not want to be progressively marginalized.”
Meanwhile, scientific research is pushing towards unexplored boundaries, even generating mice from two mothers or two fathers through new genome manipulation technologies. In contrast, Futuro nazionale holds the anchor firmly. “I find it totally wrong,” Bergamini concludes, “to allocate time, resources, and training credits to paths of this kind and to face yet another clumsy attempt to distort reality, as if we were inside the worst TV series, where fantasy is passed off as normality. Healthcare training should focus on scientific, clinical, and professional skills useful to operators and citizens, not become a vehicle to impose a strange ideological vision.”
