Bologna, August 17, 2026 – Saying that the weight of those bags was excessive is almost an understatement. Too bad that the weight of almost 50 kilos in total for the suitcases that a 50-year-old Nigerian was carrying was the least of the problems. The total weight of 48 kilos was actually determined by a massive load of narcotics that the Nigerian was trying to bring into the country after landing at ’Marconi’ airport last Saturday.

The check at the Bologna airport
Around noon on Ferragosto, in fact, the 50-year-old Nigerian had landed at the Bologna airport and before crossing the arrivals threshold he was subjected to a targeted baggage check by the Guardia di Finanza officers. A check that soon revealed the reason behind the unusual weight of those bags. Inside, the Nigerian courier was hiding 40 kilograms of cocaine and another eight of amphetamines. A discovery that led to the immediate arrest of the 50-year-old by the Guardia di Finanza, with transfer to prison pending the validation hearing by the judge. The narcotics were entirely seized and the 50-year-old is now accused of drug trafficking.
Operation by the Guardia di Finanza
This is the outcome of a check that is part of a series of operations carried out by the Guardia di Finanza at the airport. Operations resulting from months of monitoring some passengers arriving from the African continent to Italy through the main commercial routes on intercontinental flights. The officers’ attention has focused in recent months on passengers who systematically appear to have traveled from Africa to Bologna through the main hubs for these routes, mainly from the Netherlands.

The other case
An almost identical path to that taken at the beginning of July by two other Nigerian couriers, aged 50 and 30. Two people who in that case were also stopped by the Guardia di Finanza while carrying another type of substance inside their luggage. In that case, besides an arrest and a charge for the two Nigerians, there was also the seizure of as much as 130 liters of drug in bottles: a liquid variant already ready for use of the so-called ’date rape drug,’ called in this case ’Monkey Tail’.
