The incident happened on Sunday evening, around 8 p.m., on via Somalia in Portomaggiore, a neighborhood where the municipal swimming pool is located, near the hospital (the streets are named after African cities and countries). The circumstances are still unclear, the carabinieri are investigating. But the serious episode shook the whole town. Susi Rimessi, a resident of Milan, was in Portomaggiore to visit her sick mother and disabled sister, at the house on via Libia. This is where the story begins.
A walk with the dog, then chaos: “Scene recorded with a cellphone”
The woman went out to walk the dog, took via Somalia. At this point, in the middle of the street, a first argument began between Susi Rimessi and a Moroccan family who did not want the dog to pass there. “In their religion it is not welcome,” the woman says. But it seems that the dispute also arose, according to some witnesses, because the woman was recording the scene with her cellphone. Details that will be subject to investigation. A neighbor also intervened to try to make peace, an unsuccessful attempt.
The argument escalated into a scuffle, with the woman getting the worst of it. Help was called. A patrol of the carabinieri from Portomaggiore and an ambulance arrived on the scene. Medical personnel assisted the woman who was injured in the head. A child from the Moroccan family also had minor abrasions. The case will be subject to further investigation, also with the testimonies collected by the local carabinieri station. Rimessi went to the station to file a complaint. The woman wanted to make public and denounce what had happened. She posted a photo online, in the image she is seen bandaged and wearing a blood-stained red shirt. “I thank the medical staff for their prompt intervention. They had asked me to go to the hospital, but at first I had to take care of my mother and sister. Then I went alone to the hospital for treatment.”
In her account, a long post on social media, she explains her version. “I was walking my dog on a leash, on via Somalia, a man came out of the gate ordering me not to pass in front of their homes with the dog. I reacted by saying that democracy prevails and I go where I want, without invading others’ property. The man punched me on the temple with a blunt object, visible in the video I recorded. I fell to the ground in a pool of blood, I suffered various bruises and abrasions on my body. This person took my phone. I think to delete the video, but he failed. It unlocks with a code and facial recognition. Fortunately, the police and ambulance were prompt. I received four stitches on a temple, I came home full of anger.” The video was reportedly handed over to the carabinieri, material supporting the investigation.
Mayor Bernardi: “I will look into the case, I will meet the injured woman”
The mayor of Portomaggiore, Dario Bernardi, upon learning what happened, explains: “I am sorry for what happened to the lady. Criminal responsibilities are individual and for this reason I do not know what to say at this stage. It will be my duty to investigate and understand the dynamics. I have proposed to the woman to meet to explain the matter to me.”
