Bologna, August 26, 2026 – “An insurmountable wall of bureaucracy, indifference and disorganization.” It is with these words, full of bitterness and disappointment, that a young mother recounts the last school year experienced by her son, a 16-year-old boy enrolled in a school in the Bologna Apennines. Words that, according to the woman, trace a “ordeal” that began last September, shortly after the young man was diagnosed with acute perimyocarditis which forced him to stay home for 7 months. Initially, the family had taken steps to request home schooling, also considering that the young man has a learning disorder (Dyslexia). “A method that would have been effective in this situation – the woman claims –. But in December, four months after my first communications, the documentation and formal request had still not been forwarded by the school to the Regional School Office.”

Home schooling not activated: remote learning for 7 months
Not even with the passing of time, the mother explains, was home schooling ever activated and, for this reason, remote learning was used for a period of 7 months. “Once aware that home schooling was evidently not possible in this case, my son continued to follow the lessons remotely. The result, however, was worse than the experience during the pandemic: he was practically left in front of a screen, invisible, while the hours passed in the void of an incomprehensible background murmur or, worse, in front of a black screen because someone even forgot to activate the connection – she recounts –. I hoped at least for a one-on-one relationship to be followed better and consistently, maybe an hour a week with a teacher, but it was not possible…”.
Partial return to school
In April, the doctors granted a partial and cautious return in person and the young man was able to return to the school desks: even in that case, however, the mother points out, he did not find “collaboration or flexible planning to recover the lost topics.”
“He chooses to defend his dignity and to repeat the year”
At the end of the year, the student found himself with three subjects to recover, but the young man made another decision. “I talked at length with my son, who told me he did not want to take the remedial exams. He chooses to grit his teeth on his right to education, chooses to defend his dignity and, aware of the entire year lost, chooses to repeat the year at the same school showing great maturity. Today I tell this story so that no other student finds themselves in this situation,” concludes the young mother, who also sent an open letter to the regional school office.
