Ravenna, August 28, 2026 – Omar de Libero, who had turned 49 last Sunday, died Wednesday due to a sudden illness during a hike in the Reggio Apennines.
The 49-year-old went out Wednesday morning on his motorcycle heading to the mountains above Reggio Emilia at the hermitage of Bismantova in the municipality of Castelnovo ne’ Monti. “He left while I was having breakfast – explains his son Alex –, saying he would be back for dinner.” Around 10:30 de Libero promptly sent a selfie to the family with the view from the Pietra di Bismantova behind him, writing: “I’m at the top.”
Returning from work around 7 p.m., however, his son Alex did not find him at home, and so the first worries began. “I wrote to him and tried to call him, but he didn’t answer – he recounts –. On the phone, I have his GPS location, so I can see where he is in real time. Opening it, he was still up there, near the Hermitage. At first, I thought maybe he had dropped or lost the phone.”
Son Alex initiated the rescue efforts
However, around 8 p.m., seeing that his father still hadn’t returned, Alex initiated the rescue efforts. “I called 112 – he continues – and provided the phone’s location. The carabinieri and mountain rescue were activated. Around 11:30 p.m., they found him: he still had the earphones with music in his ears. It was terrible.”
According to what was reconstructed, the 49-year-old was struck by a sudden illness. An autopsy was not ordered and the body was returned to the family yesterday.

De Libero worked at the port inside the Amadori plant. Always passionate about motorcycles – he had bought a new one at the beginning of summer – recently he had also taken up the mountains. “He called it mototrekking – explains his son Alex –, that is, he would go out on the motorcycle, take some curves, do a hike on foot, and then return home taking some more curves. The motorcycle had always been his passion, to which he had recently added the mountains and trekking. He had already done the Via degli Dei, staying away for a few days.” The loss? “Immeasurable, my father was a calm and good person. The memory of the many moments spent together remains.” Born in Ravenna, he lived in Mezzano with his son Alex and a dog to whom he was very attached. He also leaves behind a brother and his parents. The funeral has not yet been scheduled.
