Ferrara, July 17, 2026 – Alan Fabbri, mayor of the Lega party in Ferrara, is under investigation for defamation and violence or threats against a political body. He himself announced this in a Facebook post explaining that he was registered in the register of suspects “for the case of the newspaper article placed on the opposition benches,” an article that “reported the case of the son of lawyer Fabio Anselmo, caught with a package containing about half a kilo of hashish coming from Spain.”
The matter concerns a clash in the City Council that took place at the end of May, when Mayor Fabbri was called to report on the car accident in which he was involved on May 4, in the Mantua area, in a car with councilor Francesca Savini who lost control of the vehicle and was found to have a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit (a fact that later led to Savini’s resignation). In the May 27 Council session, after a brief speech, Fabbri placed on the opposition benches a sheet with an old news agency release relating to the arrest, in 2021, of the son of the opposition councilor, Fabio Anselmo (his challenger in the municipal elections).

“It was not my intention to make it public – Fabbri explains about the young man’s arrest – something that instead was done by the former mayoral candidate for the center-left Anselmo. Otherwise, I would have already done it during the election campaign. It was just a way to confirm that I am not like them and do not have their same methods, which they have always used against me and us. It seems that I will therefore have to answer for two crimes: defamation and violence or threats against a political body (art. 338 c.p.). The complaint was filed, as already announced, by opposition councilor Fabio Anselmo, who still does not understand that, to govern a city and gain consensus, you have to win the trust of the citizens at the ballot box and not in the courtrooms. I wonder where that freedom they so much profess has gone, if even a newspaper article, moreover already public for years, can represent a serious danger for the opposition. I remain confident in the judiciary, facing this latest episode and believing that I have always acted with correctness, transparency, and in the interest of all citizens.”
