San Benedetto del Tronto, July 17, 2026 – Died at 11 years old after being trapped in the suction nozzle of a pool in Sestri Levante.
The girl, Alice, hospitalized in critical condition at the “Gaslini” hospital in Genoa, did not make it. A tragedy that could not leave Nicoletta Sprecacè, the mother of Matteo Brandimarti, 12 years old, who was a victim of a similar accident that occurred on Easter day in the whirlpool tub of a spa hotel in Pennabilli (Rimini), indifferent.
The desperate mother’s letter to Giorgia Meloni
Shaken by what happened, before the news of the death arrived, Nicoletta had written again to the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to renew the request for urgent legislative intervention to increase safety in Italian pools. “I write to you with the broken heart of a mother who lost her child in Rimini, sucked to the bottom of a pool. An eternal pain, which today is felt even more violently in the face of the tragedy of the girl from Sestri Levante, also trapped by a nozzle. How many more young lives must we sacrifice before the State intervenes?”.

This is the second time that Nicoletta Sprecacè has written to President Meloni to request a decree law making safety systems and automatic suction blocks in pools mandatory.
“The death of my son cannot and must not be in vain – Nicoletta concludes the letter – I beg you, as a mother and as President: stop this silent massacre. Make this law now, before another mother is condemned to the same, identical hell as mine”.
Organ donation “to turn darkness into life”
Upon hearing the news of the death and the parents’ decision to consent to organ donation, Nicoletta Sprecacè spoke again: “With Alice’s parents we share the greatest anguish and the choice to donate organs, to turn darkness into life for someone else. But our love cannot cover the lack of safety – she wrote in another post –. No parent should ever outlive a child due to such an injustice. This story must end. We demand safe facilities, real inspections, answers. Pools must protect our children, not take them away from us
