It was just past 5 p.m. when a small dog got caught in an electric cable. It struggled, trying to free itself. Around were some friends, but it was a 60-year-old man, originally from Foggia and a guest in the settlement for a few days, who made the move that would cost him his life. He did not think about the risk, did not measure the danger. He only saw that animal in trouble and tried to save it.
An inflatable pool a few steps away
Perhaps it was an instinctive gesture, one of those born even before thinking. In those seconds, the rules of caution do not exist, only the will to help a defenseless creature. Electricity, however, does not allow second chances. The cable becomes a deadly trap and the contact proves fatal. A few steps away is the inflatable pool, full of water, a symbol of relief sought to escape the heat of these days. The investigations will clarify whether the water played a decisive role in the electrocution. When the friends realize what has happened, they immediately call 118. The arrival of rescuers, the State Police, and firefighters is very quick. But for the sixty-year-old, there is nothing more to be done. His body is found near the towing hook of a caravan, from which the electric cable came out. Around remains an unreal silence, broken only by the voices of the rescuers and the tears of those who, until a few moments before, were sharing a normal summer afternoon with him.
The dog survived
The dog, paradoxically, survived. A detail that makes the story even more painful. The man lost his life trying to save it, without hesitation, putting the instinct of solidarity before his own safety.
