Ascoli, August 25, 2026 – The long queue of about 10 Km that on Monday had checkmated traffic on the A14 highway in the tunnel section between Piceno and Fermano was cleared shortly after midnight on Tuesday. Autostrade per l’Italia states that the inspection carried out on the San Biagio viaduct highlighted the need to proceed with an unscheduled maintenance intervention. To speed up the restoration activities of the damaged joint, about 30 people were mobilized in total, including engineers and technicians from Autostrade per l’Italia and specialized teams.
Work continues on Wednesday
Work continued throughout the night and will continue throughout today, Wednesday, until full restoration. Since yesterday, at the site where the construction site was activated, two lanes in deviation are available thanks to the activation of the so-called joker lane, opened to facilitate traffic flow during the works. During the peak queue phases, user assistance teams were also activated, distributing water to people in line with the support of Civil Protection.
Autostrade reminds that, as part of the plan prepared to facilitate summer travel, the most impactful construction sites on the network are suspended, with a progressive resumption of activities starting from mid-September. In the Piceno section, the construction site for the repair of the Vinci tunnel in Cupra Marittima will therefore be reopened.

This morning, as often happens when such disruptions occur, I called the CEO of Autostrade per l’Italia to understand the causes of what was happening, since as you know there is an agreement that suspends scheduled work sites during the high season and holiday bridges. They informed me, and I want to inform you, that during one of the regular inspections, a problem was identified on the joint line of the San Biagio viaduct. This required the need to urgently proceed with an unscheduled maintenance intervention, which will continue until the joint on the bridge is fully restored. I am aware that, especially in these days of summer return traffic, encountering long queues can be unpleasant, but safety must come first of all”.
