Bologna, August 15, 2026 – “After Ferragosto the summer will temporarily change its face, but be careful not to consider the long phase of intense heat that has accompanied us for weeks as over. We will probably not witness the definitive end of the scorching summer, but a more lively and dynamic phase,” says Roberto Nanni, certified meteorologist at Ampro.
The latest updates outline a first mini summer break between Monday, August 17 and Tuesday, August 18, when “a disturbance descending from Northern Europe will also brush our country, favoring an increase in instability especially in the northern regions and along the Adriatic side. For Emilia-Romagna the passage could be particularly interesting,” explains Nanni.
When instability arrives
“Instability could increase in the Northeast already in the second part of Monday, August 17 – continues Nanni –, with chances of scattered showers and thunderstorms over Romagna and along the Apennine areas, in a still warm and very humid context. Between the night and the day of Tuesday the front should then complete its transit towards the Balkans, affecting more the Adriatic sector as well.”
Possible hailstorms
It is not yet possible to precisely determine where the most intense phenomena will concentrate, but “the contrast between the very warm and humid air mass present in the lower layers and the cooler air entering could create favorable conditions for locally strong thunderstorms, accompanied by hail, sudden gusts of wind and very intense precipitation in short intervals of time.”
How much temperatures drop
“On the thermal front the change will be evident, but not as drastic as initially hypothesized from the first model outputs,” clarifies Nanni.
In Emilia-Romagna there could be a drop of several degrees, “approximately 4-7°C compared to the maximum values of the hottest phase, with the most noticeable drop in areas affected by thunderstorms and especially in the eastern sector of the region.”

The maximum temperatures could thus return around 30-33°C, with locally lower values in the areas most involved by the passing disturbance.
“On the Riviera Romagnola the decrease could initially be more contained due to the high sea temperature, but the passage of a cooler air mass and the strengthening of the wind will certainly make the heat less oppressive,” clarifies the technician.
But the heat is not over
The nights could temporarily become more bearable, but the heat is not over yet. “Already from Wednesday, August 19, in fact, the anticyclone will regain ground and temperatures will again trend upwards.”
New disturbance from August 20
“The game, however, could reopen in the second part of the week,” warns Nanni. “Between Thursday, August 20 and Friday, August 21 a new disturbance is indeed hypothesized over Northern Italy. At the moment it seems to initially affect especially the Northwest, but later it could advance towards the Center-North. For Emilia-Romagna this scenario is still to be confirmed, but if the front manages to shift eastward, it could represent a decidedly more interesting passage than that of Monday.”
In any case “for Emilia-Romagna the message is quite clear: some relief yes, but still no surrender of summer,” concludes Nanni.
