San Marino, August 22, 2026 – An intimate crowd bath full of deep emotion welcomed Pope Leo in Piazza della Libertà.
Over a thousand people gathered from the early hours of the morning in the heart of the oldest Republic in the world to witness the warm greeting from the balcony of Palazzo Pubblico.
The symbolic square of San Marino turned into a colorful portrait of faith, anticipation, and participation. The most touching moment of the day took place right by the barriers, among the crowd, in close contact with the citizens.
The Pope did not shy away from the affectionate embrace
There, dozens of mothers stretched out their arms with hope towards the Pontiff, lifting their children – many of whom were very small, just a few months old – to confidently offer them a caress, a glance, or a special blessing.
Leo did not shy away from this affectionate embrace, showing a sensitivity that moved the San Marino community.

The smiles of the Pontiff and the emotion of the parents
To each of those little ones, and to the many children proudly holding and tirelessly waving the white and yellow flags of the Vatican City, the Holy Father dedicated a bright smile and a gesture of absolute tenderness.
The teary eyes of the parents, the spontaneous chants, and the enthusiasm of the younger ones made the atmosphere truly unique and timeless. A memorable day that will inevitably remain etched in the memory and heart of all San Marino families for years to come.
