Caorle (Venice), August 21, 2026 – An afternoon of work in the home garage turned into a tragedy. Giovanni Gusso, 58 years old, known to everyone in Caorle by the nickname “Nani,” died after being hit in the face by the regulator of a scuba tank. The circumstances are still under investigation, but the main hypothesis is that of a tragic accident that occurred while the man was handling the tank.
The dynamics of the accident
As explained by Il Gazzettino, the man’s body was found early yesterday evening, inside the garage of his home on via Ottava Presa, at number 96. The alarm was raised by some neighbors, suspicious due to the prolonged silence and especially because of the door left open. The call for help was made around 7 p.m. Emergency medical personnel from Caorle 118, firefighters from the Portogruaro station, and local Carabinieri arrived on the scene. For Gusso, however, there was nothing more to be done. The doctor could only confirm his death, which likely occurred several hours earlier, probably during the afternoon. The body was transferred to the Caorle cemetery morgue and made available to the judicial authorities. The officers are trying to precisely reconstruct what happened. Numerous tools were found in the garage, consistent with the work and activities the man engaged in during his free time. Next to the body, the regulator of the diving tank was reportedly found, which had suddenly detached or exploded due to high pressure. The impact to the face caused very serious injuries, which proved fatal.
The investigations by the Carabinieri and the Prosecutor’s Office
However, one element remains to be clarified: according to Il Gazzettino, none of the neighbors heard explosions, blasts, or unusual noises during the afternoon. Moreover, no one witnessed the scene. Only several hours later did a neighbor notice the man on the ground and raised the alarm. On this point, the Carabinieri investigations continue, while the Prosecutor’s Office and investigators maintain strict confidentiality. The technical surveys will help clarify whether it was indeed a domestic accident and reconstruct the exact circumstances of the tank’s rupture. The on-duty magistrate will also have to consider the possible ordering of an autopsy.
