Rizzoli in ninth place worldwide

The most significant result is that of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute of Bologna, which rises to ninth place worldwide among orthopedic hospitals, out of 150 facilities considered, and to third place in Europe, also confirming itself as first in Italy in the specialty.

“We have welcomed this international recognition with great satisfaction, which highlights the very high specialization of our Institute – commented the general director of Rizzoli Andrea Rossi –. The possibility of offering new treatment opportunities arises from the expertise of our professionals, from the desire to jointly identify increasingly appropriate responses to patients’ needs, from the integration between care and research. Rizzoli is a reference center at the Italian and international level for highly complex orthopedic pathologies, such as bone tumors, prosthetic infections, pediatric orthopedics, complex reconstructions such as those for which 3D printed prostheses are designed; it is a constantly evolving reality.”

The best hospitals of Emilia-Romagna

However, the international ranking should not be confused with the general Newsweek Best Hospitals ranking, in which in 2026 13 hospitals from Emilia-Romagna were included, among them Sant’Orsola, the Modena Polyclinic, the Parma Hospital, Santa Maria Nuova of Reggio Emilia and other facilities in the region. These are in fact two different rankings.

What is Newsweek

The Newsweek ranking, created in collaboration with Statista, takes into account 13 medical specialties and derives from a study based on a methodology that combines three different areas. The first is represented by the evaluations of about 40,000 experts, including doctors, hospital managers, and healthcare operators. Added to these are the certifications acquired by hospitals and the implementation of PROMs, Patient Reported Outcome Measures, tools that allow the quality of care to be evaluated also through outcome measures reported directly by patients.

Italy at the international level

The result of Rizzoli fits into a significant Italian presence in the international ranking. Among the top ten positions in individual specialties are also the Policlinico Gemelli of Rome, third in the world in obstetrics and gynecology, the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital of Rome, fourth in pediatrics, and the Besta Foundation of Milan, eighth in neurology. For Emilia-Romagna, the most significant data is therefore the ninth place worldwide achieved by Rizzoli in orthopedics, while Sant’Orsola confirms its international presence with placements in six different specialties.
