Pesaro, August 23, 2026 – Coldiretti Pesca and Gruppo Pesca Fano have recently raised the alarm about the presence of mucilage mats in the stretch of sea in the northern part of the Region, specifically in the Pesaro compartment. The two organizations have taken up the reports that have come in these last days from the small fishing boats of Fano that are active, but are having to deal with this phenomenon occurring about half a mile from the coast.

“Increasingly urgent reports are coming in”
“Increasingly urgent reports are coming in about the presence of mucilage in the waters off the northern coast of our region, so much so that fishing operators, especially small stationary fishing, can no longer lower their nets,” says the Coldiretti statement. In fact, mucilage in the sea, being a gelatinous mass, sticks to the nets and with its weight drags them to the bottom, effectively preventing fishing.

According to Coldiretti, the phenomenon would be “produced by microalgae and bacteria as a response to stress from high water temperatures and sea stability and unfortunately occurs at a critical time for stationary net fishing that operators in the small fishing sector await all year.” For the latter, it is a significant economic damage. The Gruppo Pesca Fano, as well as those of Pesaro and Gabicce, will report the situation to the Region so that measures can be studied once the relevant scientific institutes have clarified exactly the causes of the formation of mucilage. At the moment, identical reports are not coming from other Marche compartments, but attention in the fishing world remains high, while no particular problems are recorded regarding bathing. The masses of algae are not on the surface.
