Castelfranco Emilia (Modena), August 3, 2026 – Matteo Renzi arrives at the Festa dell’Unità of Bosco Albergati, a forty-hectare park straddling Bologna and Modena, shakes hands, gives smiles, poses for selfies with children, Democratic militants, councilors of Castelfranco Emilia. In 2013 he spoke right from here. Someone reminds him and cheers him: “You will be the one who saves us from Meloni.”
Someone else – Renzi himself reveals it from the stage – instead challenges him: “Let’s hear what Gianburrasca says tonight”. And he really plays the “Giamburrasca”: “I’ll say it – he says –: Vannacci is the greatest opportunity for the center-left. He has divided the right. In 2022 we were divided, in 2027 they will be divided.” So, he presses in front of the audience, “I’m fine with everything, primaries, no primaries, doing it half-heartedly, but we win.” Renzi participates in the debate with the Democratic president Stefano Bonaccini entitled ‘Beating the Right’, a very fitting title on the day when the Democratic secretary Elly Schlein reminds the M5s leader Giuseppe Conte that first comes “the program shared by the entire alliance and then the primaries.”
Renzi on stage: “The only link is Bonaccini”
“I am neither Elly’s nor Conte’s best friend,” admits Renzi, and with the PD secretary, he jokes, “the only link is Bonaccini.” And, certainly, “the relationship with Conte is more complex,” but “to both I say, thanks to Vannacci, we have a penalty kick to take” and it must be taken well. At Bosco Albergati Renzi seems like one of the family, at home. On August 7, 2013, white shirt and tie, he quoted from here a singer-songwriter, Ligabue, and a song, “Non è tempo per noi” (“It’s not time for us”), which was the anthem of a generation. Less than a year later he would arrive at Palazzo Chigi. “I could say that with Bonaccini I return to the scene of the crime, because Stefano led the campaign for the primaries that started right here,” recalls Matteo Renzi.

Renzi returns to this Festa dell’Unità in the heart of Emilia
Thirteen years later Renzi returns to this Festa dell’Unità in the heart of Emilia and takes part in the main debate, much more than a guest. His presence at two other Emiliano appointments is the answer to those who, in the broad field, wonder: but is Renzi in the game? The PD’s answer to these doubts is clear: after yesterday, Renzi will also participate, on August 7, at the Festa dell’Unità of Villalunga in Casalgrande together with what seems to be the most Renzi-aligned of the Democratic leaders: the President of the Emilia Romagna Region Michele De Pascale.
And then, last but not least, between late August and September, the leader of Italia Viva will be at another historic place for former communists, the Festa dell’Unità of Bologna where, however, the leader of Azione Carlo Calenda was not invited (“what immense pain! I don’t know if I’ll ever recover,” he commented sarcastically).
