Ferrara, August 30, 2026 – At 4 a.m. between Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30, a 25-year-old Tunisian inmate died in prison in Ferrara due to improper use of the gas from the canisters with which inmates cook their food.

This was announced by Roberto Cavalieri, regional guarantor for people deprived of liberty. He recalls that the gas is often inhaled also to seek a “high” and sometimes this can be fatal. The 25-year-old had arrived at the Ferrara prison from the Reggio Emilia prison, where he had been evacuated for order and security reasons from the Modena prison. Here he had returned to his cell after breaking the restrictions of an alternative detention measure.
The young man did not present a suicide risk despite having attempted self-harming gestures in his cell. One year remained until the end of his detention.
