Modena, August 30, 2026 – Vittorina Incerti, the 76-year-old woman hit by an SUV in the heart of the town, did not make it. The elderly woman passed away last Friday at the Baggiovara hospital, after eight days of agony. The tragic accident occurred on the evening of Thursday, August 21, around 7:30 PM, as she was crossing the pedestrian crosswalk in Piazza Don Andreoli. With her was a 76-year-old friend who, fortunately, emerged almost completely unscathed from the terrible impact.
The emergency medical responders from 118, urgently dispatched from the Mirandola hospital, arrived immediately. Given the severity of the situation and the serious head trauma, the doctors requested helicopter support for urgent transport to Baggiovara. Initially, no one feared the worst: during the ambulance ride to the sports field, where the helicopter awaited, Vittorina was still conscious. Unfortunately, however, the blow to the head caused a very serious internal hematoma. Despite prompt surgical intervention, the 76-year-old never woke from the coma.
The investigations were carried out by the Carpi carabinieri, who subjected the driver to an alcohol test. The man, a foreign national, immediately stopped after the collision to park the vehicle a short distance away. He reportedly justified himself by explaining that he was suddenly blinded by the sun’s rays and did not see the pedestrians, hitting them at a low speed and unable to brake. With the woman’s death, the driver’s position has worsened significantly: the charge will now be vehicular manslaughter.

The news has deeply shaken the community of San Possidonio, where Vittorina was highly respected. Born in Ponte Pietra, she was well-liked and also known for the work of her husband Giuseppe Facchini, a long-time owner of a construction company. That evening she was going to the Villa Varini festival to buy some fried gnocco. “We were the ones who encouraged her to go out for a walk and get some movement, since she suffered from lower back pain,” her son Paolo recalls emotionally, who together with his sister Anna thanks the fellow citizens for the prompt assistance and support. The body is now lying in state in the funeral room set up in her home at Via Castello 19/A. Vittorina leaves behind her children, their respective partners, and grandchildren Beatrice and Diego. The funeral will be held on Monday, August 31 at 4 PM, departing directly from the family home.
