Ravenna, August 18, 2026 – The landing of the Humanity 1 ship, from the German NGO Sos Humanity, arrived today at the port of Ravenna with 73 people rescued in the Mediterranean. The docking operations were completed in the morning, around 10 am, starting the reception procedures coordinated by the Prefecture. Immediately after mooring, the Usmaf staff and border police boarded for the first health and routine checks. On the quay, alongside the official operations, some protesters welcomed the arrival of the ship displaying welcome signs and banners against attacks on non-governmental organizations.

This is the 28th landing since the end of 2022

The entire organizational machinery, involving the Municipality, Region, health authorities, law enforcement, Red Cross, and volunteers, managed what was the 28th landing recorded at the port of Ravenna since the end of 2022. For the Humanity 1, it was the third arrival in the city: the last previous one dated August 28, 2025, when the ship brought ashore 51 people.

“What struck us most was a small girl, she was really very happy to have arrived. The others, however, were all very tired, worn out by this very long journey. There are many Sudanese, some from Ivory Coast and Ghana. There was also a woman in her ninth month, and several small children.” This is how Ilaria Mohamud Giama from the Romagna Welcome Committee described the arrival of the 73 people at the port.

On board the ship, among the 73 migrants, there were also 17 minors, 14 of whom unaccompanied, who will be taken to a reception center in Molise, and the adults will be distributed provincially, while about 6 or 8 people will remain in the Ravenna area.

Barattoni: “In 4 years of Meloni government, over 150,000 more people have landed across the country compared to the previous legislature”

“As with all previous arrivals – wrote Mayor Alessandro Barattoni on his Facebook page – the vast majority of these people – 67 in this case – after arriving at a northern Italian port will reach various provinces of Italy, including the South. In four years of Meloni government, over 150,000 more people have landed across the country compared to the previous legislature. Meanwhile, however, nothing has improved in management pathways: in funding for teaching the Italian language, for enhancing skills, and for vocational training paths for foreigners; this has made every integration process extremely difficult and tortuous for those who are still destined to remain in the territory. No account is taken of those who instead would like to reach loved ones in other European countries.”

“Management left entirely to the municipalities”

The mayor continues: “We are therefore facing a non-management of the phenomenon that has a deep reason: to feed fears and hatred, generate clearly identifiable enemies and, at the same time, shift the daily management of people with no future or autonomy prospects onto the territories and municipalities, who become easy prey for illegal and criminal phenomena. In the last year, we have achieved a rebalancing in the allocation among Italian ports, but much remains to be done to create pathways that, focusing on social, linguistic, and work integration, guarantee the enhancement of people and the safety of communities.”
