The areas most affected by the storm with hail, wind, and rain – which broke out between last night and this morning – this time were the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Besides, of course, those of Ferrara, Piacenza, and Bologna.
After all, Arpae and Civil Protection had issued a weather alert precisely for today, Monday, July 20.
A common feature of this phenomenon is the enormous hailstones that fell to the ground.

Traffic has returned to normal on the Romea road in the Ravenna area after the interruption caused by bad weather.
Damage, mainly due to fallen trees, in the Ravenna area following the storm that affected the region this morning. Anas reports that on state road 309 ‘Romea’ in Ravenna, due to trees on the carriageway, a section at km 7 is temporarily closed in both directions. Traffic is diverted onto alternative local roads. Anas teams and law enforcement are on site to manage traffic and restore circulation as soon as possible. For about an hour around 10 am, there were also problems on the railway line in the Ravenna area. A tree fell on the tracks between Russi and Ravenna, with some regional trains canceled and others rerouted on an alternative route. Problems were resolved from 11:15 am.

Due to the prolonged storm, the temperature dropped to +18 degrees with wind gusts of 90 km/h in Casalborsetti, in the province of Ravenna.

“For Tuesday 21, strong storms are expected in multiple phases during the day, in the morning in the northern and eastern sectors of the region and from the afternoon in the Apennines with extension to the plain areas with probable associated effects and damage. In the affected areas, particularly in the western and eastern sectors, localized runoff phenomena, landslides on particularly fragile slopes, occasional rises in the minor water network, and flooding in inhabited centers are possible.”
Confagricoltura Piacenza reports a severe hailstorm this morning in the Lower Piacenza Plain. Hailstones the size of apricots hit tomato, corn, and other crops especially in the Monticelli d’Ongina area. “There is no peace in the fields,” notes the agricultural entrepreneurs’ association, which is mapping the damage. “Just a few days ago, the Piacenza area was brushed by severe bad weather that more heavily affected Modena and Reggio Emilia.” For Piacenza, this is the third extreme event since early June. A very difficult campaign is expected.
In the Ferrara area, the most affected zones are the lowlands and the coast at Bosco Mesola, Pomposa, Volano, Comacchio, Porto Garibaldi, Lido degli Estensi, Lido di Spina, Sant’Alberto, and Anita.
This morning’s hailstorm caused considerable concern in the area between Reggiolo and Rolo in the Reggio Emilia province. “It sounded like a bombing,” some local residents said. The disturbance then moved towards the Mantua area and the Modena area. Investigations are underway to assess damage to vehicles left outdoors, as well as to various structures and agriculture.

Hailstones as thick as tennis balls were observed in Medolla, Cavezzo, Camposanto, San Prospero, Bomporto. The Finale area, Mirandola, San Felice, Concordia, and the Carpi area were not spared either. Fortunately, the episode was brief, and the hail quickly melted after the rain. It is not yet possible to assess the extent of the damage.
