Giorgio, the dean of the lifeguards, after the first auctions for the beach: “Companies from Rome and Milan want to take over

Rimini, September 17, 2026 – The Rimini lifeguards are right to fear the competition from large groups and companies that have never managed beaches on the Riviera. The proof came from the first tenders by the Municipality to assign 27 beach zones in North Rimini: up for grabs are 107,000 square meters of shoreline, from Torre Pedrera to Rivabella. The 27 tendered areas are all zones designated for umbrellas and sunbeds, in front of establishments that are not on public beach land (therefore with expiring concessions) but private.

Surge in applications

At Palazzo Garampi – which will assign the zones based on the most economically advantageous offer – 38 offers have been received. In recent days, the commission established by the Municipality to assign the areas opened the offer envelopes in a public session. The majority of applications came from outgoing concessionaires, that is, from the owners of the beach establishments who have already managed those beach zones. But other entities have also submitted offers to Palazzo Garampi. And two made more noise than others. These are two companies based in Milan and Rome. Both submitted offers for more than one of the 27 beach zones. This despite the Municipality having clarified in the tenders that each participant in the bids can only be granted one of the areas.

The challenge of the dean of lifeguards

Emblematic is what happened for the beach in front of baths 45 and 46 in Viserbella managed by the dean of Rimini lifeguards, Giorgio Mussoni. There were three offers: besides Mussoni, the two companies from Rome and Milan participated. But Mussoni shows optimism: “From the checks made, one of the two companies is inactive while the other operates in sectors different from the beach sector. It is clear that both tried to steal my beach… But I am very confident in our project. The real problem is that we are only at the beginning. Who knows how many others will try.” The timing for awarding the 27 areas should be quick. Something will probably be known by the end of the month, or at the latest at the beginning of October. These days the commission is conducting evaluations and in-depth reviews of the technical offers.

The maxi establishments

These are hot days for the future of the Rimini beach. By tomorrow, expressions of interest for the macro-aggregation projects, that is, the maxi establishments formed by (at least) 8 baths and a current restaurant, must be submitted to Palazzo Garampi. Even if the expressions of interest are not binding, they will have a decisive weight in view of future concession tenders. Because the Municipality, as reiterated by Mayor Jamil Sadegholvaad in recent days, aims for a real redevelopment of the beach, after years of “immobility” also due to chaos and uncertainties about concessions. And at Palazzo Garampi they consider macro-aggregations necessary to promote the birth of beach clubs and new services on the beach, starting with pools and facilities for the winter sea. By tomorrow, the Municipality will definitely receive projects for 9 maxi establishments that the lifeguard cooperative has been working on for months. But the lifeguards are sure that “others will come forward by tomorrow.”
