Highway accident, family in hospital: 9-year-old son and mother in serious condition

Reggio Emilia, September 1, 2026 – Rescue teams mobilized this morning for a serious accident on the A1 motorway. Two cars were involved, one driven by a 25-year-old woman and the other carrying an entire family (father, mother, and two sons).

The crash occurred shortly after ten in the morning, at kilometer 130 southbound, between the Reggio tollbooth and the Terre di Canossa-Campegine tollbooth.

The rescue

Immediate call to the 118 operators, who arrived on the scene with two ambulances and emergency medical vehicles, and activation of the EliPavullo and EliBologna helicopters. Firefighters were also present.

According to information gathered in the first hours after the accident, the entire family traveling in one of the two cars was transported to the Maggiore Hospital in Parma.

Family in hospital

The mother is now in intensive care, after reaching the hospital aboard the EliPavullo helicopter, while the EliBologna helicopter transported the 9-year-old son. He was also assessed as code 3, therefore serious, and taken to the emergency room of the Maggiore Hospital.

The father’s condition (code 2) and the other 15-year-old son’s condition (code 1) are reported as less serious; they were taken to Parma by ambulance. The 25-year-old woman who was driving the other car is at Santa Maria Nuova in Reggio, with minor injuries and for examinations.

The accident clearly caused long queues and slowdowns up to 9 kilometers in the affected motorway section.
