Marzabotto (Bologna), August 20, 2026 – At 12:10 PM on August 19, 2026, History forcefully resurfaced from the ground of the Monte Sole Historical Park. “Exactly in one of the areas where the fierce Monte Sole massacre took place,” remains presumably human and dating back to World War II were found. “The discovery carries a very high symbolic, emotional, and historical charge.”
The recovery operation was carried out by the Carabinieri of the Casalecchio di Reno mobile radio section and the Marzabotto Station near the Church of Santa Maria Assunta di Casaglia.
The alarm raised by two citizens
The alarm to 112 (Single Emergency Number) was raised by two citizens who, being on site, spotted the bones directly on the ground. The soldiers, arriving promptly, conducted a thorough inspection of the area.
The reason for the discovery
According to initial inspections, the ground where the remains were found had recently been subject to work for the laying of fiber optic cable: it is very likely that these excavations brought to the surface traces buried for decades.

Dozens of unarmed civilians died in Casaglia
Casaglia is not just any ground: it is the epicenter of memory where dozens of unarmed civilians lost their lives. The sight of human remains ideally reopens a deep wound for the entire community, crudely linking today’s news to the atrocities of 1944.
Investigations to confirm the nature of the remains
At the end of the inspections, the remains were seized by the Carabinieri. Thorough investigations are currently underway to officially confirm the human nature of the bones and, where possible, to try to identify what appears to be yet another victim of the war resurfaced from oblivion.
