The discovery, the officers detail, “was made by a group of experts, who handed over the findings to the Carabinieri during a speleological exploration and documentation activity in a karst area of the Emilian capital.”

Thorough investigations are currently underway to officially confirm the human nature of the bones and, where possible, to try to establish an identity.

The precedent in Marzabotto

On August 19, exactly in one of the areas where the brutal massacre of Monte Sole took place, remains presumably human and dating back to World War II were found. The discovery carries a very high symbolic, emotional, and historical charge.

The recovery operation was carried out by the Carabinieri of the Casalecchio di Reno mobile radio section and the Marzabotto Station near the Church of Santa Maria Assunta di Casaglia. According to initial inspections, the ground where the discovery was made had recently been subject to work for the laying of fiber optic cables: it is very likely that these excavations brought to the surface traces buried for decades. The alarm was raised to 112 (the single emergency number) by two citizens who, being on site, spotted the bones directly on the ground. The officers, arriving promptly, conducted a thorough inspection of the area. Casaglia’s ground is not just any soil: it is the epicenter of memory where dozens of unarmed civilians lost their lives. The sight of human remains ideally reopens a deep wound for the entire community, crudely linking today’s news to the atrocities of 1944.
