Modena, August 4, 2026 – The very violent crash and the metal sheets turned into a deadly trap. Another tragedy on our highways: today, in a terrible accident on the A22 Brenner motorway, a 46-year-old man from Formigine lost his life.

The driver of the van was also injured: a 38-year-old hospitalized with serious injuries in Baggiovara.
The accident: a rear-end collision
The accident occurred around 3:30 PM at kilometer 305, southbound, a short distance from Campogalliano. The dynamics are now under investigation by the officers of the Modena Nord subsection but, from the first checks, it seems that the van carrying the two men violently rear-ended the truck ahead of them.
The two, work colleagues at a local company, were indeed traveling on the highway when, near the junction, the tragedy occurred.
Following the rear-end collision, the front part of the van was crushed against the heavy vehicle and the alarm was immediately raised.
Highway closed for the air ambulance
Within moments, firefighters arrived on the scene with several vehicles along with the air ambulance from Bologna and Pavullo and the 118 emergency medical services with a rapid response vehicle and ambulance. To allow the air ambulances to land, it was necessary to close the highway for some time.
Meanwhile, firefighters extracted the driver, who was then transported to Baggiovara hospital in critical condition, and the passenger, the 46-year-old from Formigine, who, unfortunately, was deceased upon the arrival of medical personnel due to the very serious injuries sustained in the impact.

The body of the 46-year-old was transferred to forensic medicine for further technical investigations.
The crash of the two colleagues
The dynamics of the crash are now under investigation by the highway police: it seems that the two colleagues had set off southbound when they suddenly crashed into the heavy vehicle.
It is not excluded that the driver may have suffered a sudden illness but much will be revealed by the footage from the highway cameras, which will certainly be reviewed in the coming days.
The accident caused significant traffic disruptions, initially completely blocked and then slowed until late yesterday afternoon.
This is the second tragedy in a few days to hit our province after the crash in the Bologna area in which a 20-year-old motorcyclist from Piumazzo di Castelfranco Emilia lost his life.
