Ferrara, September 19, 2026 – The landscape and modern life. That is, the primary need to find in nature a point of escape: thus, nature is also a place to protect, preserve, and make the protagonist. Sandra Kisters’ discourse, co-curator along with Vasilj Gusella of the exhibition opening today at Palazzo dei Diamanti, also has an environmental sensitivity: ‘From Monet to Van Gogh to Kandinsky. New perspectives on nature and modernity’.

The exhibition ‘From Monet to Van Gogh to Kandinsky’ is open until January 10
Organized by the Fondazione Ferrara Arte, with the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen of Rotterdam and the Galleries of Modern and Contemporary Art of Ferrara, the exhibition will be open until January 10, 2027, featuring as many as 120 works, arranged in a truly synesthetic path, thanks to the multisensory project ‘From lived nature to the inner landscape’: sounds and smells, serving the enjoyment of art. Several people attended the exhibition presentation, including Vittorio Sgarbi, welcomed in the hall of Palazzo dei Diamanti by a long applause.

Sgarbi: “The exhibition was an undertaking of international dimension”
The president of Ferrara Arte expressed his satisfaction for “the undertaking of this exhibition. It is a significant opportunity to restore to Ferrara the function of a place of knowledge and information regarding modern and contemporary art.”
According to Sgarbi, “the presence of works from Ferrara museums alongside those of the Museum Boijmans is proof of the international dimension of Ferrara and its ability to compete with one of the most important museums in Europe.”

Gulinelli: “It is exciting to see works belonging to even different worlds gathered together”
“The Fondazione Ferrara Arte – said the culture assessor, Marco Gulinelli – with great wisdom chose to build this story through the dialogue between works, institutions, and cultures. It is exciting to see gathered, in dialogue, works and sensibilities that belong to even different worlds.”
Then the announcement of the next exhibition at the Diamanti: ‘From freedom to censorship. Art and power in Germany 1910-1945. Masterpieces from the Neue Nationalgalerie of Berlin’, which will be held from March 13 to July 11, 2027.

Zappaterra: “We find exhibited names to which the history of Palazzo dei Diamanti is linked”
The exhibition has been declared of significant cultural interest by the Ministry of Culture. Supported by Copma, it has obtained the patronage of the Region and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Italy. “These exhibitions – states regional councilor Marcella Zappaterra – fit into the regional lines of territorial revitalization: we find exhibited names to which the history of Palazzo dei Diamanti is linked.”
“Today, in this beautiful city – adds ambassador Michael Stibbe –, is a historic moment. Ferrara reminds me in many ways of my country. Here we feel at home.”
A multicultural project
The exhibition was illustrated by Pietro Di Natale, president of Ferrara Arte, and the two curators. Sandra Kisters took care of the works from Rotterdam. The challenge of Vasilj Gusella was to find Italian works capable of dialoguing, in terms of urban and natural landscape, with the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe.
“The exhibition – says Gusella – reminds us that Italy was not a passive periphery in relation to European modernity.” “For centuries – comments Di Natale – a tree, a street… They have always been marginal. In the nineteenth century, light takes over drawing.” Thus was born the modern revolution of European art.
