After Ferrari and Lamborghini, the Bolognese family that gave life to the famous Italian car manufacturer is the protagonist of the biopic filmed between Modena, Bologna and the Cinecittà studios in Rome. The film is directed by Robert Moresco and will be released in cinemas in mid-October.

A story that began in Bologna

It tells the story of the brothers Alfieri (Michele Morrone), Bindo (Salvatore Esposito), Ernesto (Leo Ferrari), Ettore (Matteo Bassi) and Carlo (Lorenzo De Moor) and their attempts to become the first Italian car manufacturer to conquer the prestigious Indianapolis 500 Miglia: a feat that Maserati cars actually achieved in 1939 and 1940.

“Italy is not just pizza, mandolins, pasta and mafia,” Iervolino had said in 2023, announcing the film’s first steps to Variety: “We are a country with many geniuses who have left an enormous legacy. In the automotive sector, these families were pioneers, well ahead of the curve.”

Since last year, the Italian producer has also been working on another automotive legend: Camille Delamarre will direct Bugatti: The Final Race, inspired by the life of Ettore Bugatti, founder of the most mythologized car brand of the twentieth century.

The history of Maserati

Maserati was founded in 1914 in Bologna. The trident that forms the emblem of the car manufacturer reproduces that of the Fountain of Neptune. From its beginnings, the company, now known for exclusive luxury cars, was closely linked to the world of racing.

The first Grand Prix car – the Tipo 26 – was the car Alfieri Maserati drove in 1927 at the Coppa Messina, when he was involved in an accident that almost cost him his life. Alfieri died a few years later, in 1932, due to complications related to that accident.

In 1937, the Maseratis ceded control of the company. Two years later, Wilbur Shaw, driving the Maserati Boyle Special, won the Indy 500, repeating the feat the following year: the only European car manufacturer to have won twice.
