“Swimming prohibited after the storm, but the water is clean. It’s ridiculous”: the complaint of lifeguard Claudio

Riccione (Rimini), July 17, 2026 – Millions of investments to prevent white and black waters from sewers from ending up in the sea during heavy rains. Mission accomplished, because yesterday morning Riccione woke up without seeing bathing bans on the beach due to the opening of overflow outlets into the sea after the heavy storm on Wednesday evening.

Where is the bathing ban

Kilometers of swimmable coast, except for a small patch of sand where the ban appeared. We are at zone 151, at Marano. Here the rio dell’Asse reaches the sea, a small channel that ends in a pipe as it approaches the beach. On the beach there are barriers that open if the water flow is significant. “But even this time they remained closed. Nothing opened, not a drop of water came out of the overflow outlets, but here the bans are promptly put up. It is the only place where bans appear as soon as it rains from the sky, even if absolutely nothing ends up in the sea. It is ridiculous, a mockery.” The lifeguard of 151 is Claudio Angelini, and this year he has seen the police arrive to place the sign on two other occasions.

“No one checks the barriers”

“It’s always the same story, as soon as a few drops fall the ban automatically starts. No one actually comes to check if water has come out of the barriers. It would take little. Understanding if the overflow outlets are open is a simple thing, but no one does it. Better to put up the sign. Moreover, I see the police on the beach wandering around looking for a place to post it because the board that should host it was knocked down in October during a storm and has since lain buried in the sand. So they attach it to the pole that marks the boat lane.”

“But the problems exist. Here I run a sailing school”

Angelini does not stop at words and shows the photos. “Just look at those taken today (yesterday early afternoon, ed.) to see that in front of the barriers there are still sand dunes. How could they have opened?”. Not everyone shouts scandal on the beach if there is a sign. Yesterday several laid out towels in front of the closed barriers, without worrying. “But the problems exist. Here I run a sailing school. Yesterday morning I had a group of children who had to do activities. I know that nothing came out of that rio, but I had to avoid sending the children into the sea to avoid problems or complaints from parents. This situation has been going on for too long and is absurd. Those responsible do not realize not only the damage they cause to this beach, but also the image damage to the beach of Riccione.” Finally, yesterday evening, around 7:40 pm, the ‘bathing alarm’ at 151 ended.
