Modena, July 26, 2026 – The umpteenth wave of bad weather hit the Modena Apennines on time, as announced. This afternoon, strong thunderstorms, hailstorms, and gusts of wind affected part of the mountain, with the major criticalities concentrated on the western side.
Riolunato
The most delicate situation occurred in Riolunato, where a landslide dumped about 30 centimeters of earth and debris onto the roadway of State Road 12 Abetone-Brennero. The storm drain for collecting rainwater had become obstructed, causing the road section to flood. Faced with the risk to traffic, Mayor Lorenzo Checchi signed an ordinance to close the road, simultaneously asking Anas to intervene to restore traffic flow. The measure affects the section between kilometer 6+300 and kilometer 6+400, in the inhabited center of Riolunato, after the Strettara tunnel descending from Montecreto, near the roundabout at the intersection of Via Statale, Via Lezza, and Viale Europa. The ban applies to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This is not an isolated incident. According to reports from the Municipality, landslides have been occurring at the same spot for at least three years, with earth invading the roadway with every intense weather event.
Serramazzoni
Bad weather also hit the territory of Serramazzoni with particular intensity. The most violent hailstorms hit the hamlets of Monfestino and Ligorzano. In Monfestino, the large hailstones caused damage to the windows and bodywork of some cars, as well as damaging gazebos and other light structures. The effects were more contained on the side of Zocca, Montese, and partly in the territory of Pavullo, where small hail mixed with rain fell.
