Bologna, September 1, 2026 – A blitz by the Carabinieri del Nas along the main hiking trails of the Emilia-Romagna Apennines uncovered critical situations and irregularities: food expired for over two years, preserves and liquors produced without compliance with Haccp procedures. Also precarious electrical and water systems and barbecue areas set up in fire-risk zones, with insufficient or uninspected safety equipment. The operation resulted in about 400 kilos of food seized, with a total value of 24,000 euros.
5 restaurants and 6 accommodation facilities suspended among farmhouses, b&b and refuges
But that’s not all. During operations dedicated to so-called ‘slow tourism’, recreational equipment and irregular housing structures worth about 160,000 euros were also seized and 5 catering activities and 6 accommodation facilities suspended, among farmhouses, B&b and refuges, for a total estimated value of nearly six million euros. The administrative fines imposed exceed 40,000 euros.
The checks, carried out during the high tourist season to protect the health and safety of walkers, cyclists and pilgrims, involved over 20 accommodation and non-hotel facilities (agricultural companies, bed and breakfasts, guesthouses, hostels, refuges and farmhouses) in the provinces of Bologna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini, along routes such as the Via degli Dei, the Cammino Mater Dei, the Cammino di San Francesco and the Via Romea Germanica.
However, it was not specified which establishments are involved, nor were the names disclosed.
Many irregularities found during the inspections
In addition to hygienic-sanitary deficiencies, the officers found catering, camping and glamping activities without the necessary authorizations, unauthorized expansions of accommodation capacity and violations of the rules for farm businesses. From a safety perspective, there were also lodging facilities and handmade recreational equipment never tested. The irregularities were reported to the relevant municipalities, the Local Health Authorities, the Fire Brigade Command and the Emilia-Romagna Region. For employment issues, the Carabinieri Labor Inspectorate Unit was also involved.
