Montese (Modena), August 2, 2026 – Tragic dawn after the town festival. A crime has shaken the community of Montese, in the Modena Apennines, where the town was celebrating the most important festival of the year, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Snow. The victim, Daouda Sangarè, 31 years old, had also participated on Saturday. An evening with friends ended around midnight, when the man returned home, to the apartment building where he had been living for about a month with his wife, who had joined him from Africa. There he met death a few hours later.

The investigators’ reconstruction
From an initial reconstruction, it seems that the 31-year-old opened the door to the killer when it was still dark outside. It is unclear why that unexpected visit occurred at the house on via Righi, the road leading to the town center. The fact is that, at the end of an argument, Daouda was stabbed to death on the doorstep of the basement apartment. Some people were reportedly taken to the police station and questioned by investigators; it is unclear if any of them is a suspect, but officially as of this evening there were no judicial arrests: thorough investigations are ongoing regarding the dynamics and motive: surveillance cameras in the area are under review.
A resident: “I heard a scream and raised the alarm”
“At five fifteen I heard a scream,” recounts a resident of the apartment building who alerted emergency services (118), “but I thought it was coming from the street and didn’t pay much attention. Later, around 8, I heard the wife’s cries. She was with a friend, she had left the house in tears after seeing her husband on the ground.” In the tense situation and in an attempt to ask for help, the woman had locked herself out because her husband’s body, fatally wounded, was pressing against the door from the inside. “I called 118. I took a tool from the garage and opened the door,” the neighbor continues, “there was blood on the floor. The wife wouldn’t stop crying, I let her into my apartment and gave her a glass of water.”

Neighbors and acquaintances: “A great pain in the heart”
Neighbors and acquaintances cannot find an explanation. “We have a great pain in our hearts,” repeat close friends who immediately reached the apartment building. Everyone excludes that Sangarè had made enemies. “Dao stayed away from trouble,” says Macan, one of the friends. “He was a very calm guy, certainly not someone you would easily argue with; on the contrary, he led a fairly reserved life, all home and work. I also go out little, but when we met, we would stop to chat and joke. A wonderful person, I can’t imagine anyone who could have held such a grudge against him to the point of killing him.”
He worked as a welder in the agricultural spare parts company: “Never a problem”
Another friend says he was the one who suggested a few years ago that he move to Montese because where he previously lived, in Massa Carrara, he couldn’t find work. Since 2021 he had been working as a welder at the Bernabei agricultural spare parts company in Salto. “Never any problems, nor did I notice strange behavior. He had no vices, didn’t drink, and was very respectful of his religion,” explains the owner. On his phone, he still keeps photos that the 31-year-old sent him a couple of years ago of his wedding in Africa. A few weeks ago Daouda – originally from Guinea but born and raised in Ivory Coast – had moved from the hamlet to the town into a larger house. The wife is desperate, repeatedly supported by the carabinieri. On site, besides 118 with the helicopter, the military and the forensic team arrived for investigations. Mayor Carlo Castagnoli hopes clarity will be achieved.
