Giuseppe, Ettorina and Romano: who are the victims
Those who lost their lives under the rubble were Giuseppe Pieroni, 48, a computer scientist and cycling enthusiast, and Ettorina Paccapelo, 89, while her son Romano Cerquetti, 60, died at Torrette hospital in Ancona, where he had been transferred after being extracted from the same rubble. The roar was heard in much of the northern part of the city shortly after 5 am. Pieroni was caught in his sleep in the bedroom on the second floor of the house where he lived with his elderly parents. According to initial reconstructions, the explosion originated precisely on that level of the building, which consisted of two floors and an attic. The violence of the blast left him no escape.
The rescue efforts
When rescuers managed to reach the area of his room, there was nothing more they could do for him. Among the first to arrive on the scene were the teams of the fire brigade from the provincial command of Fermo, preceded by colleagues from the Civitanova Marche detachment.

The two elderly people in shock
Upon their arrival, they found Savino Pieroni, 89, and his wife Vittoria Lanciotti, 70, on the second-floor balcony. The two elderly people, cold, scared, and in shock, kept asking for news of their son Giuseppe, unaware that he was already the first confirmed victim of the tragedy.
The search for Ettorina and her son’s death
On the lower floor of the building lived Romano Cerquetti, 60, and his mother Ettorina Paccapelo, 89. While the 60-year-old had been located among the rubble, extracted, and transferred to the regional hospital in Ancona, the search for his mother continued for hours until her lifeless body was found around 3:45 PM. A few minutes after the elderly woman’s body was found, the news of her son’s death was also released. With the rescue phase concluded, now begins the phase of silence and respect for the victims, followed by investigations. The investigations will have to clarify what caused the violent explosion and what were the causes of the collapse that devastated the city of Porto Sant’Elpidio.
