Reggio Emilia, August 8, 2026 – Today, at the age of 100, Maria Pia Prodi, neuropsychiatrist and sister of former Prime Minister Romano Prodi, passed away. “My sister Maria Pia – recalls her brother Romano, former Prime Minister – said goodbye to us all on August 1st on the day of her hundredth birthday. Then, due to those strange things in life, she left us in just a few days. She had a long and full life, surrounded by the affection of all of us and many grandchildren.”

Maria Pia Prodi lived in Reggio. The death occurred after a short hospitalization at the Santa Maria Nuova hospital. On Saturday, August 1st, she celebrated the milestone of a century of life with her family. Maria Pia leaves behind her sister Fosca, brothers Romano and Franco with Laura, sisters-in-law Gisella, Sandra, and Anna, nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
The funeral will take place tomorrow morning starting at 8:30 am from the Reverberi funeral home on Via Terezin in Reggio to reach the parish church of San Ruffino in Scandiano. After the religious farewell ceremony, the body will then be accompanied to the local cemetery. Maria Pia Prodi had long worked as a neuropsychiatrist and was respected, even nationally, for her profession, always carried out with great commitment and care towards many patients.

She was very well known in our city. She had also held the position of head of the former psychiatric hospital San Lazzaro in Reggio. “Maria Pia – say the family members – was also active in social work including with the ‘Catholic Doctors’. She had also gone to Africa for a period of volunteering. A person of enormous stature. She was the pillar of our family: we often gathered at her home for celebrations such as Christmas. She was well known for her profession as a neuropsychiatrist, an activity she continued even during retirement.” Many messages of condolence and support have reached the Prodi family after the news of Maria Pia’s death.
